Anxiety

If you're looking for the September Challenge, click HERE.

This is Holly, her mother was a cocker spaniel/collie cross and her father a terrier.  She is a strong determined lady and she is in her 13th year.  Unfortunately the last few years she has suffered from anxiety.  Some dogs are born anxious, but it is also common for them to start getting anxious in old age.  This type of anxiety generally gets worse each year.  Loud noises including thunder and fireworks  caused her to wreck things if we were not home.  We tried calming tablets which had some effect, but not entirely,  so we bought her a Thunder Jacket.   Designed to act similar to swaddling clothes on a baby, it wraps around the dog and has a high success rate.  Then, last year when we were away, Holly decided she would not be left in the caravan for longer than a minute!  She wrecked tea towels, towels, 2 quilt covers, and a mat before we got a cage for her.  We had one at home, but home was several hours away.  Once left in the cage Holly tried to wreck the cage.  She was so obviously distressed we decided that she had to come with us wherever we went, which made life a little difficult.  Our other three dogs were fine left in the caravan.   We consulted a vet and found  it was an old age/dementia problem.  Once back at home it was as if the behaviour had never happened.

This year we were worried.  Before we left home we bought a calming collar and a calming spray.  We decided on the Adaptil make (very expensive), but it worked a treat.  We have been away for 3 months and have since tried a much cheaper make which works just as well, but smells horrible!  We still took her everywhere with us if we went out, which meant we didn't go many places, but she was happy.  I would encourage you to try these products if you have an anxious animal - not just for dogs!

If you have an anxious pet, let us know.  We love to see your pictures too.

Summertime Living

If you're looking for the challenge, scroll down one post or click HERE.

Hello Friends,

Summertime and the living is easy. It sure is for a certain pussy cat on Prince Edward Island, Canada, ever since my husband finished renovations on our new outdoor pet shelter.
Plussette has enjoyed it almost every day and doesn't mind sharing it with some of my other pets. Emma and Malu (guinea pigs) had a couple of turns. My rabbits - Ricky and Jelly Bean were out twice as well. Unfortunately, they cannot be together because they fight and have many battle scars to show for it. Our other cat, Mineau, was out once, but she complained until I brought her back in. She hates being outside.

We have a padlock on the door so if I have to be inside for a while, the pets are secure. I wouldn't leave them in there unless we were home. Many outdoor cats around here (and even small dogs) have fallen victim to coyotes, foxes or eagles. It is nice to sit outside, enjoying the weather and watching my little critters getting to do the same, without risk to their well-being.

Yup. Summertime and the living is easy, thanks to my handy and handsome husband. He is my very most favorite critter.
Thanks for stopping in. I hope you will show us pics of your pets by using the Inlinkz below. Do you have special shelters, furniture or toys that you have made or bought for them? We would love to see those too.

Tortoise or Turtle?

According to Britannica.com

"All tortoises are in fact turtles—that is, they belong to the order Testudines or Chelonia, reptiles having bodies encased in a bony shell—but not all turtles are tortoises.  The most important thing to remember about tortoises is that they are exclusively land creatures. However, not all land turtles are tortoises; thus, box turtles and wood turtles have been called tortoises, though they are not considered tortoises today. But that’s a matter for another day."

Now for a funny story :)  My daughter in law knew I wanted a tortoise, a friend of a friend had two for free!  I jumped at the chance!  This person asked if I was sure I wanted them as she didn't want them back.  My daughter in law was going to collect them as we were going to be away, I assured her tortoises were easy to look after especially in summer.  I talked to my son about making a pen in the back garden for day time and my grand daughter was so excited.  My son phoned to say they had set everything up in my house, then my daughter who was looking after my plants, phoned me and said "It's not a tortoise it's a turtle!"

According to Pet Education

"The terms 'turtle,' 'tortoise,' and 'terrapin' are often used interchangeably, and depending on which country you are in, may describe a completely different type of 'turtle.'

For most Americans, the term 'turtle' describes the Chelonians that are aquatic or semi-aquatic. The term 'tortoise' describes a Chelonian that lives primarily on land. 'Terrapin' can describe some freshwater or saltwater turtles, but is not often used.

If you were in Australia, you might call all of the turtles 'tortoises,' and in Britain, a 'turtle' would mean a saltwater species and a 'terrapin' would be a freshwater species. Are you confused yet? "

The Polish language only as one word  also, hence the confusion.  I now have a turtle (one died before they were collected), which I hope to find a good home for.

If you have a tortoise or turtle or any other kind of pet we would love to see some photographs.

We are going to try something new this month. You can vote for your favourite pet pic on this link-up.

Leaving the Nest

Hello 2CCC Followers,

The last few weeks have been rather exciting in my aviary. My Zebra Finch (Dad) and Zebra/Society Finch (Mom) have been raising four youngsters. This was after months of struggle, with the bigger birds in the aviary tearing apart every nest they built and destroying their eggs as well. I finally stepped in and constructed a barrier of pie plates around the nest to deter the bullies.

On Sunday, June 11 all four babies flew from the nest. They had a wonderful time until Mom (Carmelite) and Dad (Fred) shooshed them all back for bedtime.
One of the babies
Dad (Fred) with another baby
Here is a little video of the finches in my aviary.
And as a special treat for 2CCC followers, here is a digi I did of Freddy Finch. Please credit Tickell Expressions if you use it in a project and post it online.

Thanks for following 2 Crafty Critter Crazies. With 18 pets (plus the 4 baby finches), I am claiming the distinction of being the craziest of us all. :)

We'd love to see photos of your pet critters.  Why not use the Inlinkz below to post a photo or two?  Just link back to your main blog URL unless you've done a specific post with your pet's photo.

Hugs & Smiles,
Teresa

Oodles of love

Pets bring us many benefits, they help us relax, lower blood pressure and stress levels and give us positively oodles of love.  All they ask for (apart from food, water and exercise) is for us to love them in return.  I have had puppies, tropical fish, marine fish (very hard work!), canaries and a cockatiel.   No birds now (natural causes!) and we sold the fish, so now we just have the four dogs, Holly, Jack, Annie and Red.  Annie and Red are the youngest and they are both miniature poodles.  Red is Annie's daughter.

Poodles are fairly high maintenance as far as their coats go, unless you keep them short.  My husband is not keen on their coats being too short!  They are very playful, full of fun and energy.  They love their walks, often coming back with bits of leaves and twigs in their coats!  Here they are freshly bathed and brushed, looking lovely.

Aren't they just beautiful?  They give me oodles of love!  Tell us about your pets.

Flying Rabbits!

Hello Friends,

This is Teresa and this is the first mid-month post at 2 Crafty Critter Crazies. The team has already shown you a bit of our craftiness. Now is where we get to show you a bit of our passion for pets - our Critter Craziness.

This month I want to introduce the newest member of my pet family - Ricky, the Lionhead (aka Richard the Lion-hearted.) This little rabbit can actually fly.
Well, maybe not exactly fly, but he sure can jump. I couldn't figure out how he kept getting into the guinea pig cage until I finally caught him at it. Can you believe that someone, who barely stands (on all fours) 4 inches off the ground, can jump 33 inches without a running start?

I changed everything around in the GP cage so there was nothing for him to land on. There was a shelf/roof on the side closest to the open floor, to make a Guinea pig hiding place. I moved the shelf to the wall side. I had hoped that would keep my curious little bunny out. I also bought many different toys for Ricky, hoping to keep him busy. It took him a little while to figure out, but he still managed to get in there.

I don't know why Ricky keeps jumping in with the Guinea pigs. Is he lonely for another bunny buddy? If that is the case, can I possibly say no? Could you say no to that face? In the meantime, I have put a roof on the GP cage. Ricky jumps on top sometimes, but he can no longer get inside.

Here is a free digi for you. I call it "Hip Hop Rabbit - with Wings!" I hope you enjoy it. Please do not post the image anywhere, but you can send your friends here to pick it up for themselves. You can file this one under "Tickell Expressions".
As promised, this is the place you get to show off your own critters, be they furry, feathered, scaly, or other. Post your critter pics in the link-up and tell us about your baby in the comments. You may also post pics of what you made with this month's image. There will not be a prize, but I think this is going to be FUN. I hope you think so too.

Please note, this is NOT the Inlinkz for the challenge.  That can be found here or you can scroll down one post.  This is just for showing off your own fur babies.
